Madrid Fusión cooks presented congress president José Carlos Capel with a chef’s jacket at the opening ceremony. “He’s one of our own”, explained group spokesman Joan Roca.

Benjamín Lana, chairman of Vocento’s Gastronomy division, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Madrid Regional Government, and José Carlos Capel, president of Madrid Fusión, officially opened the 18th Reale Seguros Madrid Fusión, a congress “where we have all come of age”, according to Joan Roca who, alongside other cooks, surprised the congress president with a chef’s jacket signed by them all.

“He’s one of our own”, he told the congress. “This is a tribute to José Carlos’ work for all of us and for Spanish cuisine. A person who has travelled and found talent, a person who has turned Madrid Fusión into a world benchmark. That’s why, although he might not be a chef, he’s one of our own”, said the Girona chef.

José Carlos thanked them for the gift, and pointed out the feats they had achieved in those 18 years, “years during which Madrid Fusión has revealed some of the sector’s illustrious personalities past and present such as René Redzepi, Gastón Acurio, Heston Blumenthal, Paco Torreblanca, Pierre Hermé … it was they who developed the congress, “and now we have a new location and more space, and more international projects such as the recent Bogotá Madrid Fusión”, added Benjamín Lana.

The official inauguration was rounded off with a family photo around the commemorative cake by master artisan Ricardo Vélez.
